Horta (Azores)

Horta, on the island of Faial, is one of the most emblematic towns in the Azores, deeply connected to the sea and maritime tradition. Located in a beautiful sheltered bay, it offers spectacular views of Pico Island and the imposing mountain that gives it its name. The town’s connection with the ocean can be seen everywhere, from its busy harbour and the famous Horta Marina, a stopping point for sailors from all over the world, to the colourful paintings left by sailors on the walls and breakwater of the marina. Exploring Horta on foot is a chance to discover a peaceful and welcoming town where architecture, history and landscape come together. The historic centre, with its churches, traditional buildings and gardens, invites visitors to take a leisurely stroll, while the proximity of the sea provides some of the best views of the surrounding landscape. The town is also an excellent base for exploring Faial and discovering its volcanic landscapes, the Caldeira, the Capelinhos Volcano and the island’s many natural areas. For visitors to the Azores, Horta offers a particularly appealing combination of heritage, nature and maritime culture. Whether strolling through the town, visiting the marina or enjoying traditional Azorean cuisine, there are always opportunities to experience the unique atmosphere of this Atlantic town.
