Festas D´Agonia (Viana do Castelo)
The Romaria de Nossa Senhora d’Agonia, held in Viana do Castelo, is one of Portugal’s most emblematic traditional festivals, taking place every year in August and attracting thousands of visitors. For several days, the city becomes a vibrant celebration of tradition, music, colour and devotion, with its streets beautifully decorated and an atmosphere that combines Minho religious traditions with the richness of local popular culture. Traditional costumes, especially the distinctive Viana costumes, gold jewellery, music and dancing make the Romaria a unique experience for anyone visiting Viana do Castelo. One of the most eagerly awaited highlights is the Historical and Ethnographic Parade, which makes its way through the city streets and presents, through hundreds of participants and allegorical floats, episodes from the history and aspects of the life, customs and traditions of Viana and the Alto Minho region. The parade is a true journey through the area’s cultural heritage, showcasing traditional occupations, agricultural and fishing activities, popular customs and elements of everyday life in the Minho, accompanied by music, colourful costumes and spectacular displays. For visitors to Viana do Castelo, the Romaria d’Agonia is an excellent opportunity to discover the identity and traditions of the Minho in a lively and festive atmosphere. Among the many events taking place during the celebrations, the parade stands out for its extraordinary visual richness, making it particularly appealing to those interested in photography, culture and heritage.
